With the more transmissible Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus continuing to spread, more breakthrough infections are being reported, though they still represent a cross-section of the state’s population.
According to the Department of Health, the median age of the 100 vaccinated patients who died from the virus was 82.5 years old, and approximately 75 percent had underlying conditions at the time of their death.
The deaths reportedly represent approximately 0.002 percent of all vaccinated Massachusetts residents. There are also 395 breakthrough hospitalizations as of Tuesday, Aug. 10.
“Breakthrough cases in Massachusetts are incredibly low, and those hospitalized or who have died are even lower,” health officials stated.
“All available data continues to support that all three vaccines used in the US are highly protective against severe disease and death from all known variants of COVID-19,” they noted. “The best way to protect yourself and your loved ones is to get vaccinated.”
